D24B Representative Steve Miller: November 2024

Vote NO on Prop 1
There is a movement afoot to radically change Idaho elections. It is Proposition 1 and it is on the ballot this November.

Prop 1 has 2 parts, an open primary and ranked choice voting for the general election. The “open primary” has traditionally referred to a primary where we could vote for candidates from either party. The Prop 1 “open primary” is misleading. It is really a populist free for all. Many refer to it as “jungle primary”. Any number of candidates can run for office with any political party affiliation. Alaska had a US Representative ballot with 48 names! This system is designed for tom-foolery and deception. It would open the door for even greater manipulation by out-of-state dark money. It would lead to the destruction of political parties as they now exist. States with this system in place have a
more liberal slate of candidates for the general election.

Prop 1 also establishes ranked choice voting. The top 4 primary candidates would be on the general election ballot. The top-four could all be from one party! Your choice would be to rank the candidates top to bottom, 1, 2, 3, and 4. The ballots would then be
processed by a complex computer algorithm to select a winner. If no candidate receives a majority vote, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is dropped and those ballots remaining choices would be reassigned to the remaining candidates. This procedure continues until a candidate receives a majority of the ballots still remaining.

In Maine elections, 60% of the winners did not receive a majority of the people who voted! 11% of the ballots were “exhausted”, or thrown out, because of the process!  And thousands of ballots were not counted because they were filled out wrong.

This is a complicated system that is hard to understand, difficult to count and extremely difficult to audit. There is no paper trail, no way to directly connect physical ballots to the outcome. This takes the process out of the hands of the local election committee and subjects it to “experts” using a system they may or may not completely understand. Ranked choice elections have taken up to 6 weeks to determine the winner!

I believe the average voter will feel frustrated and disenfranchised by a complicated, convoluted scheme of manipulating elections. So who benefits from these changes? Liberals and radical liberals who want to dilute our conservative values of limited government, faith, family and freedom. Proposition 1 has huge support and dark money from out-of-state organizations. Do you think out-of-state dark money and people like George Soros have the best interest of Idahoans at heart? I don’t think so either.

Vote NO for this kind of primary!
Vote NO for Ranked Choice Voting!
Vote NO on Proposition 1!
